CHICAGO (January 11, 2018) – Giving winter-weary House Music fans a glimpse of summer fun, the Chosen Few DJs collective today announced details of their 28th annual Chosen Few Picnic & Festival, set for Saturday, July 7, 2018 in Jackson Park. Particulars include guest performances from GRAMMY-nominated House Music legend Ralphi Rosario, and prolific singer-songwriter Sheree Hicks, plus a limited-run Early Bird ticket sale starting Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. CST.
“Each July, we celebrate Chicago as the birthplace of House Music, and showcase the incredible music talent our city has produced,” says Wayne Williams, founder and president, Chosen Few DJs. “This year, we’re especially proud to welcome hometown heroes, Ralphi Rosario, a fellow House Music architect who helped introduce this music to the masses as part of the ‘Hot Mix 5’, and Sheree Hicks, whose beautiful sounds have moved dancers and DJs across the globe.”
Started in 1990 as a small gathering of friends behind the Museum of Science & Industry, the Chosen Few Picnic & Festival is now one of the world’s longest-running events dedicated to House Music, attracting more than 35,000 fans each year. The family-reunion-inspired event features 12 hours of music from the Chosen Few DJs – Wayne Williams, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, Alan King, Andre Hatchett, Terry Hunter and Mike Dunn, plus guest DJs and vocalists.
While still a student at Schurz High School, Ralphi Rosario became a founding member of the influential Hot Mix 5, a group of DJs who took Chicago’s nascent House Music sound to the airwaves in the early 1980s. He went on to produce the definitive classic, “You Used to Hold Me”, and since then, has served as a producer and remixer for a host of artists, including Gloria Estefan, Deee-Lite, Pet Shop Boys Madonna, Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin and Kelly Clarkson. In 2012, Rosario and producing partner Abel Aguilera, received a GRAMMY nomination for their Rosabel Club Mix of the Rihanna track “Only Girl (In the World)”.
Sheree Hicks began honing her musical gifts as a child singing at church in her native Memphis, Tenn., and then in Chicago, where she moved at age five. After high school, she built a reputation as a go-to vocal arranger, writer and singer across several musical genres. Hicks has written for Blackstreet with Teddy Riley, Heavy D, C&C Music Factory, Terry Dexter, Nick Loren, and Emily Bell, among others, and is responsible for contemporary House classics including, “Keeping My Composure”, “Experimental”, “No Place Like Home”, plus a new remix, “Let Love In” featuring Chosen Few DJ Terry Hunter.
A two-week Early Bird ticket sale for the 2018 Chosen Few Picnic & Festival begins on Tuesday, Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. CST, with a limited number of $25 (plus fees) General Admission tickets available at www.chosenfewdjs.com.
Additional guest performers will be announced in early spring, when Advance Sale General Admission tickets, VIP packages, parking and reserved tent space packages go on sale.
About the Chosen Few DJs
Part of the first wave of DJs and producers in Chicago who created the sound that became known as house music in the 1970s and 1980s, The Chosen Few DJs was a group of popular DJs from Chicago’s south side—Wayne Williams, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, Alan King and Andre Hatchett—who played their unique brand of soulful dance music to huge crowds throughout the city. Since 1990, the group has organized the Chosen Few Picnic & Festival, a weekend celebration of House Music in Chicago’s Jackson Park. In 2006, the group added DJ and producer Terry Hunter, and in 2012, DJ and producer Mike Dunn.
In 2014, Hunter and Williams produced the GRAMMY-nominated hit “It’s Your World” by Jennifer Hudson feat. R. Kelly, while their production work on “Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics” won an NAACP Image Award. In 2017, the collective launched Chosen Few Artist Management, Inc. to represent global House Music talent, including Monique Bingham, and Chuck “The Voice” Roberts. In early 2018, Chosen Few DJ Mike Dunn released the critically acclaimed “My House from All Angles”, his first album since 1990. More information: chosenfewdjs.com; Facebook; Twitter; and Instagram.
